ASTHMA TREATMENT
Pediatric Asthma Doctor Creates Custom Asthma Treatment for Kids
An estimated 60 million Americans suffer needlessly from all types of allergies and asthma, even though new custom asthma treatment options are available for kids. Today, there are nearly 5 million sufferers of this condition under the age of 18 – affecting nearly one in 20 children. Narrowing it down even further, about half of the pediatric asthma cases develop before the age of 10!
At Dr. Shukla’s Asthma, Allergy and Sleep Center of New York, we understand how frustrating it is to live with symptoms of this condition, so it is our duty to accurately diagnose and treat your child’s case quickly. We can help your children suppress attacks, practice breathing techniques and lead a normal life – no matter what age.
Children’s Asthma
Asthma is a lung condition treated very often in children and teens. It causes stressful breathing issues, with symptoms of coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. This condition affects a person’s bronchial tubes, otherwise known as the airways. Breathing normally through an airway from the nose or mouth is simple when there is no case of asthma present. However, a child with this condition will struggle with the production of excess mucus and inflamed airways, which constricts airflow heavily.
As a result of this condition, the airways of a child will then experience high sensitivity to certain situations, including exercise, dust, cigarette smoke, and pet dander. Thus, the hypersensitivity makes the smooth muscles that surround the airways tighten up. The combination of airway inflammation, excess mucus, and muscle tightening will increase the difficulty of passing air through narrow airways making it both dangerous and all the more treacherous to live comfortably.
Common Childhood Asthma Triggers
- Viral infection
- Outdoor allergens: Pollen from grass, weeds, and trees
- Indoor allergens: Pet dander, dust mites, and mold
- Irritants in the air: Smoke, chemical fumes, and odors
- Strenuous exercise
- Stress
- Certain foods
- Weather conditions: Extreme dryness, wet, windy, or cold air
Asthma Symptoms in Kids
The first signs of asthma in kids may be recurrent breathing issues such as wheezing that stem from a common respiratory virus. As your child grows older, asthma associated with respiratory allergies is more common. Although these symptoms vary from child to child, they may get worse with time. Parents often experience difficulty tracking asthma in kids because they may not be around them every part of the day.
However, there are common symptoms to be aware of, including:
- Frequent coughing
- A wheezing or whistling sounds while exhaling
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness or congestion
- Chest pains
- Trouble sleeping from shortness of breath
- Wheezing and coughing with a cold or the flu
- Difficulty breathing while playing or exercising
- Fatigue
